How to go To Gangtok

By plane

The nearest airport to Sikkim is the Pakyong Airport, which is closest to Gangtok. The flight goes from Kolkata to Sikkim. However, direct flights from several other countries, including Bangladesh, are underway. There is also Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri. The airport is located 126 km from Gangtok and it takes about 4-5 hours to reach by car.

By rail

The nearest railway station in Gangtok is the New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri. The station is about 120 km away from the city. The car can be reached within 4-5 hours.

Through the road

You can reach Gangtok by taxi from Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong. Before entering Sikkim, take the entry/exit seal by showing the permit at Sikkim Gate. You will find a shared taxi near the Siliguri SNT bus terminal. The fare will be nearly 250 rupees.

Some important information When Visiting Sikkim

  • Smoking, Throwing garbage and spitting are not legally allowed in all public areas of Gangtok. So be careful about this.
  • If you go to the red market near MG Marg, you will find a bus stand. From here you will have to rent a taxi for Rumtek Monastery. Rumtek Monastery is not included in the Gangtok site Seeing.
  • There are restrictions on foreign access in Sikkim. They are required to have a reserved area permit or a R.A.P. Have to take entry permission from here, although it is free and it needs only a valid passport and an Indian visa.
  • Certain areas of Sikkim are designated as protected areas and a secure territory permit for foreigners and Indians to enter such places, or with PAP. Foreigners are not allowed to enter certain areas, especially in areas near the border. For example, Nathula Pass, Zero Point prohibits entry of foreigners into these areas.
  • In Sikkim, you must be kept the permission letter with you to avoid hassle later ( If Needs).
