Char Kukri Mukri is located in the mouth of Meghna, about 120 kilometers away from the city of Bhola, at the side of the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Bangladesh. At a time, the island was full of dogs and rats (known here as Meku), for this reason, it became popular with the name of Char Kukri Mukri. Under the supervision of the forest department on 14th May 1989, this island was started to plant the Mangrove trees and it was about 3,60,000 acres of land. Now it is a beautiful forestry area with the trees of Geoya, Pashur, Keora, coconut, bamboo, and cane. At present, there are 8565 hectares of forest land in the Char Kukri Mukri. Rest of the land which is 217 hectares, is the habitat for wild animals. On the other hand, nearly 4,810 hectares of land has been kept for the settlement of farmers and agricultural farming. The main occupation of people living in Char Kukri Mukri is Fishing and Farming.

Among the animals in the Char Kukri Mukri, there are Chitra Deer, Monkey, Fox, Octave, Wild Buffalo, Moorfowl (wild-Cock), wild-cat, etc. Besides, there are many species of birds and reptiles, such as Egret, Conglomerate, Mathura, Wilk Cock, Wild peacock, Koyail, etc. In the winter season,  a lot of guest birds come here. Besides, the sea beach of Char Kukri Mukri is very clean and clear. There are more than 9 crores of living trees in this forest. The Varani canal has reached on the Bay of Bengal through the Char Kukri Mukri and Meghna River. If you go crossing the Char, it started the Bay of Bengal. You will get the feelings of Cox’s Bazar or Kuakata sea beach here. The local people know this place as Balur Dhum. You can enjoy the wonderful views of sunrise and sunset from here also.

How To Go To Char Kukri Mukri:

Dhaka Sadarghat To Bhola By Launch And Then Char Kukri Mukri: It is the easiest way to go to Char Kukri Mukri, in general, waterway. It will save huge money as well as it needs less physical work.

There are two ways of going to Char Kukri Mukri.

After starting from Sadarghat to Bhola, you have to land to Ghosher Hat Launch Terminal, then go to Char Kochopia Ghat by laguna (If you want to go to Char Kochopia with another way, you have to come via Char Fasson). However, it is better to go to Char Kochopia Ghat by Leguna, directly from Ghosh’s Launch Terminal.

You can go to Bhola by Launch from Dhaka Sadarghat. You will find the launches including Prince of Russell-4, Karnaphuli -4, New Sabbir 2 and 3 launches from Dhaka’s Sadarghat. You have to land on Ghosh’s Launch Terminal. It will take for the double cabin or couple cabin BDT 1800 to 2200, for single cabin BDT 900 to 1000, for deck BDT 250 to 300.

(2nd Way) Then come to Char Fasson by Bus (BDT 150) or Tempo (BDT 70 to 80).  Now come to South Aicha from Char Fasson by Motorcycle (BDT 200), or by bus (BDT 30). From Dokkhin Aicha you can go to Char Kochopia by Tempo or Motorcycle with BDT 15 to 30. Then with a trawler, it will take BDT 50 to 60 for Char Kukri Mukri.

(1st way) It is the easiest way, as my perspectives. From Ghosher Hat Terminal, it will take 40 to 50 minutes to reach Char Kochopia directly by a Leguna. It will take only BDT 40 to 50 for a 30 KM way. If you take the Leguna as reserved, it will need BDT 700 to 800.

Now you can go to Char Kukri Mukri directly from Char Kochopia by Trawler through the Tetulia River. It will need only BDT 55 to go to Char Kukri Mukri. From  Char Kochopia, there are only two trawlers that go to Char Kukri Mukri. One will go at 9 AM and another one will go to 12 PM. So to avoid the hassle, reach on the ghat at the right time. You can also go by reserving the trawler, in this case, it will take BDT 600 to 800.

Check out also travel info of Nijhum Island.

Remember that all the launches left from Dhaka between 5 am to 6 pm and from Ghosh’s Ghat it leaves from 3 pm to 4 pm. And the route plan of the launch is often changed. So be sure to talk with the launch authority before the journey.

If you want you can stay at Forest Department, Coast Trust and Rest House of Union Parishad. Of course, you have to take permission to stay here. Although most of the travelers go to Char Kukri Mukri for camping, if you are one of them, then you have no problem for passing the nights.

At the same time, when you do camping, the group will arrange Bar-B-Q or other foods with rice, or chickens. On the other hand, if you contact with the Forest Department, Coast Trust and Rest House of Union Parishad for cooking or arranging the foods, they will help to get it.
